Fall 2024 Application

Students who were admitted to UM prior to Winter 2024 or who were admitted to UM in Winter 2024 as external transfer students are eligible for this application cycle.

Application Workshop

Students interested in joining the Engineering Honors Program are invited to attend a 90-minute Honors application workshop. These workshops will be offered at a variety of dates and times in March, April, and September 2024. These workshops cover the opportunities Engineering Honors provides, walks through the application, and gives students an opportunity to engage in a format similar to our Honors Seminar series. Students who attend and complete a workshop will be eligible to submit an application to the Engineering Honors Program. You can sign-up for an application workshop here!

The Application

Before starting your application, you will want to have the following ready:

  • A resume
  • Your course plan for completing your selected academic minor
  • Responses to the short answer questions
  • Faculty and other recommendations
  • Open-ended response (either an e-portfolio or video)

Resume

We encourage you to visit the ECRC to review your resume prior to submitting your materials.

Minor Course Plan

We encourage you to visit with your academic minor advisor prior to submitting your materials.

Short Answer Questions

In the application, you will be prompted with one short answer question. Please keep all responses to 250 words or less.

  1. (Non-EGL Specialization only) Why did you choose your minor?
  2. (EGL Specialization only) The Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) Honors specialization requires students to complete the CoE Honors program with a Global Business/Operations focus, culminating in a capstone project through the Tauber Institute for Global Operations. Explain why completing a project through the Tauber Institute aligns with your interests and potential career paths.

Faculty and other Recommendations

Students will be asked to provide two recommendations as part of their application. At least one recommendation must be submitted by a UM faculty member, preferably one who has known you in a classroom setting (professor or lecturer, not GSI).

The second recommendation may be submitted by another person of your choice (GSI, advisor, employer, coach, etc.).

Recommenders do not write a letter of recommendation – instead, they are prompted to evaluate candidates on the following:

  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Demonstrated academic leadership
  • Ability to work with others
  • Academic engagement beyond the classroom
  • Desire to make a positive impact in a chosen field
  • Commitment to personal growth

Open-Ended Response

In the application, you will be prompted to provide an open-ended response to one of the questions listed below. You must respond to these questions with a video response of two to four minutes or an e-portfolio. Students opting to respond to a question with a video response should consider using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method. More information on this will be provided at your application workshop.

  • Tell us about a community or cause that you are passionate about and are part of or want to be involved in.
  • How would you deal with failure/adversity?
  • If you had the opportunity to go back in time, tell us about an action of yours you would change.
  • Tell us about a time you experienced failure and what you learned from it.
  • Tell us about a time when you received constructive feedback and how you responded.
  • What is something new you’ve learned in the past two years given the social changes that have occurred within the U.S. and around the world (pandemic, racial inequality, health disparities, etc.)?
  • What is something you learned in the past two years that has changed your outlook?
  • What is something you have learned from someone else’s perspective in the past two years?

Academic Requirements

Due to the additional academic requirements of the Engineering Honors Program, we recommend students have a 3.0 GPA when they apply to our program. Students must attain a 3.2 GPA in order to graduate from the Engineering Honors Program. All students may apply to the Engineering Honors Program, as we will consider applications holistically. This includes considering academic history and plans that will support student success in meeting academic requirements and graduating with Honors. Graduating with Honors requires a minimum 3.2 GPA at the time of graduation.

Students who enter their senior year below a 3.2 GPA will attend an individualized advising meeting and will need approval from the Honors Faculty Advisor to continue with the program.

Students interested in EGL must be accepted to the Engineering Honors Program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher at the start of the Fall term to be invited to interview for EGL in November. Students who possess a cumulative GPA between 3.4 and 3.59 will be considered on a case-by-case basis to interview for EGL.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for Fall term is Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024.

Timeline

After the deadline passes, the Honors faculty and staff will review the applications and decisions will be provided before Winter 2025 course registration opens.

Students interested in joining the Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) specialization of the Engineering Honors Program first need to apply and be accepted to the Engineering Honors Program through the method described above. Students will be contacted once admitted to the Engineering Honors Program for an interview for the Engineering Global Leadership specialization.
